Wellness Wednesday

Each year at Christmas, stories are told and Bible passages read which tell the story of the birth of Christ. We hear of the 3 Wise Men and their gifts of frankincense and myrrh. Yet, few stop to wonder about these precious gifts that were given to Jesus. Why frankincense? What is myrrh? In fact, these resins and their essential oils were priceless medicines, worth their weight in gold to the Egyptians and Greeks, and were used to treat everything from skin disorders to viral infections, from cancer to depression and more.

Over time our culture has grown less and less dependent upon essential oils. Some in the medical community look down on the use of these God given medicines. But did you know…..?

Frankincense and Myrrh in Ancient History

Myrrh was used in embalming the Egyptian pharaohs and is listed in the Ebers Papyrus (16th century BC), one of the world’s oldest medical texts.
The Greeks considered myrrh a sacred substance and those who could afford the resin used it as incense and to treat virtually every illness. The Greeks began using myrrh to replace living sacrifices in the 3rd century AD.
Frankincense was used in ancient times and throughout the Middle Ages by the Christian church as holy anointing oil.
Both frankincense and myrrh have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine, African healing, and Indian Ayurvedic practices.
Myrrh is the most often repeated aromatic essential oil in the Bible.
In his book Healing Oils of the Bible, Dr. David Stewart suggests that essential oils and their uses were well known at the time the Bible was recorded. Although healing oils such as myrrh and frankincense were very valuable and not commonly used except by the rich, most people would have known exactly what they were and how they could be used – which is why the Bible could refer to these and other herbs and oils without explaining their use.

Frankincense and Myrrh in Modern Healing

Frankincense and myrrh are used in essential oil form as a natural treatment for the skin, to strengthen the immune system and fight viruses and bacteria, and for emotional and spiritual benefits.

Myrrh has been said to represent mother energy, and frankincense father energy. They are still used for spiritual “anointing” and in energy work, where the vibrational frequency of these oils can uplift the spirit, draw on spiritual and emotional protection, and aid in meditation. They may be diffused in the air, as at holiday time, or applied on the chakras or energy tapping treatment points.

Frankincense has been clinically researched to combat cancer and for use as an antidepressant. It is commonly used in European hospitals. Frankincense is being researched for its ability to simulate human growth hormone production and to assist in hormone balance.

Myrrh is used to treat skin conditions, respiratory diseases, hormone imbalance, and has been clinically shown to kill bilharzia and other parasites. It is also a common base note in perfumery.

These are examples of just 2 essential oils. There are many. I started research on essential oils to educate myself. My son had been sick for far too long, his doctor had prescribed 10, 10, I need to repeat that, 10 different medications for a 2 year old cough and congestion. We ended up seeing 3 different doctors and were prescribed 12 medications before we started seeing results. The thought of the poison entering his little body made me so sad. It was helping him. I had to fight him tremendously to take the medicine. I thought “this is insanity”. Sadly, while watching my guilty pleasure, Real housewives of Orange County, a few seasons ago I thought about looking into the use of essential oils because one of the wives used them. I wanted to live cleaner. Thinking that would be a great way to start I went into a health food store looked at the shelves upon shelves became overwhelmed and walked out. I believe in aromatherapy, love adding stuff to my baths, and cook with some oils already. Why not use them medicinally? Fear? Laziness to learn so much info? As luck would have it, the universe gave me another hint. This time it came through a friend. She sent a text asking if I thought about using them. She sent a link to a great website to purchase a kit. Although I have not done so yet I intend on doing so soon. I look forward to sharing our success. The importance of their benefits cannot be lost in this time of commercialism. I understand that they are used to an extent in modern medicine but not enough and not pure enough.

What benifits do pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils provide? Abundanthealth.com explains:

Essential oils are the regenerating, oxygenating, and immune defense properties of plants.
Some essential oil constituents are so small in molecular size that they can quickly penetrate the tissues of the skin.
Essential oils are lipid soluble and are capable of penetrating cell walls, even if they have hardened because of an oxygen deficiency. In fact, essential oils can affect every cell of the body withing 20 minutes and are then metabolized like other nutrients.
Essential oils contain oxygen molecules which help to transport nutrients to the starving human cells. Because a nutritional deficiency is an oxygen deficiency, disease begins when the cells lack the oxygen for proper nutrient assimilation. By providing the needed oxygen, essential oils also work to stimulate the immune system.
Essential oils are very powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants create an unfriendly environment for free radicals. They prevent all mutations, work as free radical scavengers, prevent fungus, and prevent oxidation in the cells.
Essential oils are anti-bacterial , anti-cancerous, anti-fungal, anti-infectious, anti-microbial, anti-tumoral, anti-parasitic, anti-viral, and antiseptic. Essential oils have been shown to destroy all tested bacteria and viruses while simultaneously restoring balance to the body.
Essential ols may detoxify the cells and blood in the body
Essential oils containing sesquiterpenes have the ability to pass the blood brain barrier, enabling them to be effective in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.
Essential oils are aromatic. When diffused, they provide air purification by:
Removing metallic particles and toxins from the air.
Increasing atmospheric oxygen
Increasing ozone and negative ions in the area, which inhibits bacterial growth
Destroying odors from mold, cigarettes, and animals
Filling the air with a fresh aromatic scent
Essential oils help promote emotional, physical, and spiritual healing.
Essential oils have a bio-electrical frequency that is several times greater than the frequency of herb, food, and even the human body. Clinical research has shown that essential oils can quickly raise the frequency of the human body, restoring it to its normal, healthy level.
